Helen Roscoe From Blackburn Wins Finals Of Prestigious Jane Asher Home Baker Of The Year Competition 2009

9 October 2009. Keen home baker Helen Roscoe (49) from Blackburn, Lancashire beat off off competition from four other finalists to win the finals of the prestigious Jane Asher Home Baker of the Year Competition 2009, and take the title home to Blackburn.
the winnerHelen won a first prize worth £25,000 at the final bake-off of the competition which took place at the Poggenpohl Showrooms, Deansgate, Manchester on the 8th October 2009. There she battled it out with four other finalists, overseen by a panel of high profile judges, including Jane Asher herself, celebrity chef, Andrew Nutter, and TV personality Lucy Meacock, as she re-created her winning entry ‘Lancashire Belles’ in front of a live audience.

For good luck Helen sported her father's flat cap for the duration of the competition, and, while it obviously had the desired effect, she also felt that it definitely helped her "keep her head" under intense pressure as she prepared her dish!
Helen’s delicious recipe, based on Lancashire Parkin Cake, is a wickedly modern twist on a classic recipe. “I love baking choux pastry, traditional puddings and combining different elements to create an unusual dish” says Helen, and her winning recipe, which did all three, absolutely hit the spot with the judges.

Helen is no stranger to the art of baking, and started working in her early teens in a huge baking factory in Blackburn. Her first job was working on the ‘pie belt’ putting the lids on the pies. She then moved on to the chocolate éclair department, and later still moved to Marks & Spencer where she worked for many years on the food side of the business. Eight years ago Helen moved to Spain to run a 9 bedroom Hostel with her partner Paul, where she developed additional baking and cooking skills by cooking for the hostel clients and people in their own homes. In June 2009 they returned to Blackburn to set up this concept in the UK.

Helen was up against finalists including Toni Perry-Thomas from Walthamstow, London, Hester Duffy from Plymouth, Jodie Arksey from North Yorkshire and Magda Allan from Finsbury Park in London.

Organised by Leigh-based Victoria Foods, The Jane Asher Home Baker of the Year Competition is all about putting the fun back into home baking, and reaping the benefits of creating something delicious for family and friends. Open to anyone over the age of 16, the Competition focuses on finding the most interesting and creative recipes from entries submitted online via www.homebake.co.uk.

“The standard of the recipes entered for this year’s competition was higher than ever, and we picked five really interesting cakes for the bake-off in Manchester", says Jane. “What was also great is that we had entries from so many younger home bakers this year. Helen's winning Lancashire Belles was such a creative pudding that it was a clear winner for us. I wish her all the best in her future baking career!"

First prize is a stunning new kitchen from Poggen pohl worth €25,000. Runner-up prizes included a weekend cookery course for two at Lucy Cooks in the Lake District with an overnight stay at the 4* Lakeside Hotel in Windermere, and Chocolate Wedding and Celebration Cake courses at Manchester’s famed Slattery’s School of Excellence.

GARY BELCHER WINS HOME BAKER OF THE YEAR 2008

Gary Belcher from Letchworth, Hertfordshire, beat off tough competition from four other Finalists to walk away with the Jane Asher Home Baker of the Year trophy and first prize of a £25,000 Poggenpohl Kitchen with Miele Appliances. The Final was held on October 9th at the stunning Poggenpohl Kitchen Showrooms in Manchester, where a panel of high profile judges including Andrew Nutter, Lucy Nicholson and Jane herself, tasted each of the delicious recipes. Gary’s success comes on the back of recent research which shows that two thirds (63%) of British men are baking more often than their fathers, contributing to the continuing growth of the home baking market.

A record number of entries were received this year for the annual competition – with an impressive rise in male Home Baker entries from just 5% to 11% since last year! The aim of which is to remind people that baking is fun for men and women of all ages and backgrounds. Open to anyone over 16, the Home Baker of the Year Competition focuses on finding the most interesting and the tastiest recipe from entries submitted online via the website www.homebake.co.uk.

Gary commented on the moment he was notified of being short listed, “I was so shocked when I received the news about my inclusion in the final of the Home Baker of the Year. I really enjoyed the day; we had a great time and to take the title is just astounding – I think Jane is a great patron for home baking.”

Gary’s signature dish of Apple and Blueberry Crumble Cake was tasted and scrutinised by a host of judges including:
• Jane Asher
• Local celebrity chef Andrew Nutter
• Lucy Nicholson – famed Lucys of Ambleside
• Karen Barnes, Deputy Editor, Good Housekeeping magazine
• Carmel Thomasson, Lifestyle feature writer ,MEN
• Martin Littler, Product Development Technologist

Actress and queen of home baking Jane Asher commented, 'Gary's cake was delicious, and he's a very worthy holder of the title of Home Baker of the Year. The standard of recipes we received this year was exceptional and the surge in entries confirms the statistics: that the number of households baking at home is increasing rapidly. Partly this is due to a growing interest in the quality of the food we give our families, but also there's no doubt that the current financial situation emphasises the economic sense of baking at home!”
The runner-up prize went to Wendy Mann with her superb Tropical Zingy Chelsea Buns – she won a fantastic weekend cookery course for two at Lucy Cooks in the Lake District plus an overnight stay at the 4* Lakeside Hotel. Three runners-up receive a luxury hamper of goodies from the Jane Asher Home Baking range and a Poggenpohl gift pack.

Jane Asher welcomes a new judge onto the judging panel for the Home Baker of the Year

Andrew Nutter, celebrity chef and owner of Nutters (Manchester Restaurant of the Year) joins Home Baker judging panel for the Final October 9th.

Andrew Nutter is one of the most exciting and innovative of the new breed of celebrity chefs to hit the culinary circuit.

He has had a remarkable career, at thirteen he was runner up in the national junior cook of the year award then a finalist in the Daily Mail Cook of the Year which led to him being offered a job by Anton Edelmann at London’s Savoy Hotel as soon as he left school.

After three years intensive and invaluable training at the Savoy, Andrew moved to France for two years working in Michelin starred restaurants all over France. The next move was back to London to the Greenhouse Restaurant under the watchful eye of Gary Rhodes.

At the tender age of 21 with the backing of his family `Nutters` was launched and within a few months was packed every night. Eventually larger premises were needed and Nutters is now housed in the lavish setting of an 18th century manor house, set in 6 ½ acres of groomed parkland with spectacular views across Ashworth moors, Greater Manchester and beyond. All this makes perfect settings for the extravagance of Andrew Nutters cuisine.  Nutters recently celebrated it’s Diamond Anniversary with a ‘Star Studded Event!'

Awards soon followed and Andrew clinched The Lancashire Chef Of The Year and then the Young Mancunian Business Man of the Year. Andrew hit the big time when he turned up at the awards dinner with NUTTER shaved into the back of his head. T.V companies took interest and before he knew it he was on Ready Steady Cook! Afternoon Live, Granada cult strand “THE FLYING CHEF” and his own radical channel 5 series “UTTER NUTTER”.

He works alongside all the main supermarkets, endorsing and promoting products and he has filmed two videos and recipe leaflet promoting local and regional produce. He is a great believer in giving back to the local community and in recent years has raised £20,000 for the N.S.P.C.C and CHRISTIES hospital Manchester.  Andrew is frequently asked to judge competitions, make guest appearances and works as a presenter.  He demonstrates all over the country and leading food festivals and media events.

Andrew was a regular guest on BBC Great Food Live! ITV’s Saturday Cooks & Weekday Cooks. He appears regularly at the Gourmet Food Festivals in South Africa – in Durban, Capetown and Johanesburg.  Corporate demonstrations and presentations are one of his specialties.  His current book is UTTER NUTTER and his popular cookery master class mornings operate on the first Thursday of each month.

Summer Baking - The Perfect Mix

The start of summer brings summer fetes, graduations, weddings, camping trips and picnics - and more pressure for home bakers everywhere! Help is at hand from baking expert, Jane Asher who, ahead of her Home Baker of the Year contest, shares some useful advice to help would-be bakers rise above the competition.

Jane Asher explained:

“If you’ve never baked before it can seem quite daunting, but as long as you weigh the ingredients carefully and follow the recipe you really can’t go wrong. This all-in-one easy tray bake recipe is a great way to start and is perfect for summer teas and picnics – the fresh, zingy lemon keeps it from being over sweet, and it’s easy to transport if you leave it in the baking tray.”

LEMON TRAYBAKE

225g spreadable butter
225g castor sugar
4 medium eggs
300g self-raising cake flour
1 tsp baking powder
Grated rind and juice of 1 large lemon
1 quantity lemon butter icing
Sugar ‘lemon’ slices or raspberries to decorate.

Pre-heat the oven to 180°C (160°C fan assisted, 350°F, gas mark 4). Prepare a 12”x9” baking tray. Simply put all the ingredients into a mixing bowl and beat well together. Turn the mix into the baking tray and bake for 35-40 minutes until risen and springy to the fingers. Let the cake cool in the tray. Spread with lemony butter icing, mark into 16 slices and decorate each one with a sugar ‘lemon slice’ or a few raspberries.

LEMON BUTTER ICING

100g spreadable butter
200g icing sugar
Grated rind of 1 lemon, plus 1-2 teaspoons of the juice

Put the butter and sieved icing sugar into a mixing bowl and beat together (I do it in my mixer, with the lid on, which stops the icing sugar flying about, but you can do it with a fork or with a handheld electric mixer if you take it slowly). Stir in the lemon rind, then add the juice little by little, beating all the time until the mixture gets really light and fluffy.

Food Northwest Awards 2008. Shortlisted for Manson Insurance Award for Innovation

Victoria Foods recently celebrated 25 years in business at its Leigh base where it manufactures baking, dessert and beverage mixes.

A family company, committed to making high quality products using the best ingredients, Victoria Foods has focused a great deal of effort during the last year,  in expanding its brand portfolio to create baking and dessert mixes for people of all ages and experience  - from the health conscious to those who are looking for an indulgent treat to share with their friends and family.

In 2007, the company developed and launched a range of dessert and baking mixes with Weight Watchers.  The range was developed with low sugar and with a low saturated fat, within strict POINTS® controlled development guidelines, using all natural ingredients. This is an impressive technical feat considering cakes are generally high in saturated fat and sugar. The company sees this as creating the first branded ‘diet’ offering on the home baking and dessert fixtures. The Weight Watchers dessert mixes have also been produced in a unique shelf-space saving ‘stick pack’ format.

Work during 2007 has also included a partnership with Nestle Creations under the Jane Asher Creations banner, to create a dual branded range of baking mixes combining iconic Nestle confectionery brands with the Jane Asher name.

Dan Ross, Managing Director of Victoria Foods said: “We are committed to investing in new systems and technology to ensure that our business grows into the 21st century. We strive to stay one step ahead of the competition and continue to evolve our product portfolio to respond to what consumers want.”

The winner won a small hamper which contained a Jane Asher ‘Cakes For Fun’ Book, a wooden spoon, signed by Jane Asher, and a selection of Jane Asher cake mixes, and a bag of Quench.

We also held a free competition for those who visited our stand. Another hamper, containing a Jane Asher book, signed spoon, cake mixes and Quench, was the prize for participating in the draw. Diane Fitton, of Whitefield in Manchester, won the draw. She later said “Thank you for the Hamper and the Tea… The lemon tea is so very nice hot or cold and the whole family loves it!”

As supporters of The National Autistic Society, we were proud to donate half the proceeds taken from the day to the Society, which Jane Asher is President of.

Mother’s Day Competition

To launch the 2006 Home Baker of the Year Awards and to celebrate mother’s Day 2006, we at Victoria Foods thought how fitting it was to celebrate the best bakers we know –mums! Readers of various newspapers across the nation joined in by completing a small form saying why their mother’s deserved to win a Mother’s Day cake designed by Jane Asher herself, in addition to her book.

One winner from each of the five regions received their prizes, with five runner-ups from each area also receiving a hamper each.

We would like to congratulate the winners:

Nicola Ryall Bolton Evening News
Janice Hamilton Cambridge News

Mrs Phyllis Britton Bristol Observer

Well done to all 25 runner-ups for the competition. We hope you enjoyed the hampers!

Also, we would like to wish Mrs Phyllis Britton a very Happy Birthday. She will be 96 on Friday 8th April. She was nominated for the competition by Frank, her son. He said in an email to Jane Asher, “She was absolutely thrilled to receive the cake. Thank you so very much!”

Victoria Foods tops the North West

Leigh-based Victoria Foods has won a top award as the North West Small-to-Medium Enterprise (SME) Manufacturer of the Year.

The company, which makes baking, desert and beverage mixes, won the prestigious title at The Manufacturing Institute’s Accelerating The Transformation Awards 2005, held in Manchester.

The award, sponsored by The DTI Manufacturing Advisory Service, recognised the company’s all-round manufacturing achievement, particularly its “excellence in people development”, which has been paying great dividends across its operation.

Mark Bareham, factory manager at Victoria Foods commented: “We are delighted to have won this major award, which is a tribute to all our employees. Our efforts have paid off in increased productivity and sales, while our labour turnover has dropped to almost zero.”

The awards were judged by a panel of national and international experts from government, industry and academia. Commenting on Victoria Food’s success, they said: “Victoria Foods has been zealous in identifying opportunities to develop its people to drive through sustainable improvements. It is a great example of what small to medium sized enterprises should be doing.“

The award was presented at the Manufacturers’ Annual Dinner, hosted by Manchester’s Manufacturing Institute and attended by representatives from leading North West businesses.

As well as recognising the SME Manufacturer of the Year, there was also the Pannone & Partners Award for Overall North West Manufacturer of the Year, which was won by Hitachi Automotive Systems Europe Ltd, of Bolton.

The awards scheme was open to companies of all sizes and different industry sectors from across the North West.

In her welcoming introduction to the awards ceremony, The Manufacturing Institute’s chief executive Julie Madigan said it was a real celebration of excellence and outstanding achievement.

“These companies, along with many others in the region, are meeting global challenges head on – not only surviving but in many ways taking on the world’s best and winning,” she commented.
“North West companies continue to drive improvement and innovation to add value to their products and services. All of our finalists are golden examples of the success this can bring.”
